Mother's Hanbok
Medium: Block Ink, Acrylic
Size: 48x66 inches
This is a life-size portrait of my mom in a Hanbok, a traditional Korean garment. In this portrait, I include symbols from the South Korean flag, as well as Korea’s national flower and national animal, the Amur tiger. The red, white, and blue on my mother’s handbook signify a connection to the colors of the American flag. Additionally, I printed a gold pattern of the South Korean flag’s four trigrams on the Hanbok’s fringes. Park and Kim, my mom’s last names, are printed onto her headpiece in Hangul letters.

Lifecycle
Medium: Graphite
Koi fish are often paired with the Yin-Yang symbol, representing two opposite energies coexisting as one. Like the cyclical movement of a bicycle wheel, the circular movement of the two koi fish reveal that dueling sides can live in balance and harmony. The title “Lifecycle” speaks to the eternal push and pull of opposing forces.
